White pine trees (Pinus strobus) are majestic evergreens that have captivated people for centuries. Towering high above the forest floor, these trees can reach heights of 80 feet or more, with some individuals exceeding 150 feet. Their straight, slender trunks are adorned with smooth, gray-green bark that becomes furrowed and darkens with age. The branches, which grow in whorls around the trunk, spread outwards to form a broad, pyramidal crown.

One of the most distinctive features of white pines is their soft, bluish-green needles. These slender needles grow in bundles of five, a characteristic that sets them apart from other pine species. The needles, which can grow up to 5 inches long, remain on the tree for several years before turning yellow and falling off. In the spring, new growth emerges in the form of light green "candles" that add a vibrant touch to the forest canopy.

White pines are also known for their long, slender cones. These cones, which can grow up to 8 inches in length, are initially green but turn brown as they mature. The cones, which hang from the branches like ornaments, release their seeds in the fall, providing food for wildlife and ensuring the regeneration of the forest.

White pines are native to eastern North America, where they thrive in a variety of habitats. They prefer well-drained soils and full sunlight, but they can also tolerate some shade. These trees are often found in mixed forests, where they provide habitat for a variety of animals, including birds, squirrels, and deer.
